Recipe for Shepherds Pie with Ground Beef

Shepherds pie is quite an interesting name for a food.  Just the name alone, makes you want to know where it got its name.  This dish is also popularly called cottage pie during the 18th century.  It is a British meat pie that is top with mashed potato.  It is usually available at pubs in Ireland and England.  Originally, it was made with finely chopped roast meat leftovers.  However, at present, it is commonly made using ground meat, preferably, beef or lamb.

Well, if cottage pie is making your mouth water, get to know some recipes for Shepherds pie with ground beef.  It will definitely provide you some comfort during the cold winter months.

The recipe we will have for this article is a pie filled with ground beef, delicious vegetables flavors, mashed potatoes, and spices.  So, prepare to show off your master chef skills and make a Shepherds pie in your kitchen.  This dish is truly a homemade classic!

For the ingredients:

-    1 tsp butter
-    5 carrots (chopped)
-    4 to 5 big potatoes (peeled and cubed)
-    Shredded cheddar cheese (1/4 cup)
-    Salt
-    Pepper
-    Chopped onion
-    1 pound ground beef
-    2 tsp all-purpose flour
-    1 tsp oil
-    1 tsp ketchup
-    ¾ cup of beef broth

Directions:

1.    Prepare a large pot with salted water.  Bring to a boil.
2.    Add the potatoes, then, cook until tender, yet firm, for approximately 15 minutes.
3.    Drain and mashed the potato.
4.    Add the butter, chopped onion, shredded cheese.  Sprinkle with salt and pepper to taste.  Set aside
5.    In another big pot with salted water.  Bring to a boil.  Add the carrots cooked for 15 minutes or until tender but firm.
6.    Drain, mash, and then, set aside.
7.    Preheat oven to 350 Fahrenheit
8.    In a frying pan, add onion, cook until translucent in color.
9.    Add the ground beef.  Cooked until turned browned.
10.    Drain excess fat before adding the flour.  Cook for a minute.
11.    Add the ketchup and beef broth.  Allow to a boil, them simmer for 5 minutes.
12.    Evenly spread the beef on a 2 quart casserole dish.  Next, spread the mashed carrots.  Lastly, top it up with mashed potato and sprinkle some cheese.
13.    Cook in the preheated oven for 20 minutes or until the top is golden brown.

Tips:

- You may add milk to the potatoes before they are mashed for lumpy mash potatoes.
