Recipe for Limoncello Liquor (Home made)

If you ever been to Italy chances are you have heard of limoncello, or better, taken a sip of this lemon liquor.  This drink is primarily produced in the Southern part of Italy, particularly in areas near the Gulf of Naples, coast of Amalfi, Sorrentine Peninsula, Capri, Ischia and Procisa islands, among others.  Usually Sorrento lemon peel is used to make this delicious liquor, still, other type of lemons would result in tasty limoncello.

Almost all Italian families have their own secret recipe for limoncello liquor because most Italians and non-Italians living in Italy are hooked on this drink.  Even though limoncello is available in stores and restaurants, noth

ing beats homemade lemon liquor.

Just how popular is limoncello?  It is such a hit that it is regarded as Italy’s national drink!  This drink is light, refreshing, not to mention, sweet and tasty to the palate.  Apart from that, it can be combined with juice to serve as cocktail drinks, and compatible with champagne.  On top of that, you can sprinkle limoncello over fruit salads, fresh strawberries, and even on ice cream.

As previous mentioned, there are different versions of recipe for limoncello liquor.  One of these recipes is written below.  Simply gather the essential ingredients, and get ready to make your first homemade limoncello.

Ingredients:

10 to 15 sliced lemons (you can add more, if you want)
2 bottles of 100 proof vodka (750ml) or Everclear—the best choice
3.5 to 4 cups of white sugar
5 cups of water (distilled or filtered tap)

Now that all the ingredients are set, let’s get started.

Instructions:

First part:

1.    Select the lemons you will use.  As much as possible, choose organic lemons, since they are not waxed and pesticide free.  It is very important because it’s the lemon skin that you need.  Also, select lemons with thick skin, it is easier to zest the lemons.


2.    Wash the lemons using vegetable brush and hot water.  In order to remove any wax or pesticides, especially for non-organic lemons.  Pat dry
3.    Gently zest the lemons using vegetable peeler or zester.
4.    Prepare large glass jar, then, pour vodka or Everclear alcohol
5.    Put the lemon zest in the jar
6.    Cover the glass jar.  Allow to sit for ten days at room temperature, afterwards in a cool dark place until the 40th day.

Second part:

1.    In a big saucepan, mixed sugar and water.  Let it boil for about 5 to 7 minutes.  Shortly, allow the syrup to cool down, then, pour the limoncello mix.
2.    Add the cooled sugar mix to the limoncello.
3.    Cover the glass jar; wait for 10 to 40 days.
Third part:
1.    After the allotted time, strain the limoncello to discard the zest.
2.    Place the strained drink in another bottle.  Tightly seal
3.    Keep the limoncello in the fridge, until ready to drink.
