Recipe for Cottage Pie

Cottage is a favorite English meat pie, especially among the people in the United Kingdom.  However, this meat pie is gaining popularity in other parts of the world too. Cottage pie is often confused, not to mention, compared to its counterpart Shepherd’s pie.  It is understandably so, since both have almost the same recipe, except for one ingredient.  The recipe for cottage is basically made from beef mince. Meanwhile, Shepherd’s pie uses lamb mince.

Unlike the regular pies, both cottage and Shepherd’s pie do not have pasty crust at the bottom.  If you are interested to make your own pie, simply follow the recipe for cottage pie below.  It is surprisingly super easy, in which your family will surely enjoy the meat pie you made.

Traditional recipe always include potato toppings, and meat with vegetable stuffing.  The best thing about this pie is that you can tweak its recipe and make it your own, without hurting your budget.

Nonetheless, preparation time would usually take about 30 minutes, whereas cooking time is 40 minutes.

Ingredients:

  • 500 g mince beef (lean)
  • Chopped tomatoes
  • Onion
  • Carrots
  • Butter
  • 300 ml beef stock
  • Garlic cloves
  • 6 potatoes (medium sized)
  • Milk
  • Rosemary
  • Oil (groundnut)
  • Cheese (grated)
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Chicken stock granules
  • Tomato (pureed)

Directions:

1.    Slice the onion and garlic finely.
2.    Heat the pan, then, fry the onion and garlic with groundnut oil under low heat.
3.    In the meantime, chopped

the carrots into small pieces.
4.    When the onion and garlic are soft, turn up the heat of the flame.  Add the ground beef, fry for several minutes until it turned brown.
5.    Add the carrots, rosemary, chopped tomatoes, puree tomatoes.  Mix the ingredients thoroughly so that the beef well is covered.
6.    Lower the heat; pour the beef stock and stir.
7.    Let it simmer for while.
8.    Prepare the potatoes, peel and slice into halves.  Bring to a boil.
9.    Preheat the oven to 350 Fahrenheit.
10.    Check on the ground beef, pour small amount of red wine.  Sprinkle the salt and pepper, along with one tablespoon of chicken granules.
11.    Test the potatoes if they are well-cooked by poking them with fork.  It should slide in easily.  If they were already cooked, mashed the potatoes, adding small amount of milk and butter.
12.     In an oven-safe dish, place the mince mixture and evenly pat down.  Place the mashed potatoes on top.
13.    Add grated cheese on top.  Bake for half an hour.
14.    Serve immediately
