How to Cook Butternut Squash in the Microwave?

Butternut squash is a member of the gourd family.  It is classified as winter squash which has sweet and nutty flavor, hence, making this vegetable an instant favorite.  Even though it is a fruit, it is primarily utilized as vegetable in certain countries like South Africa and Mexico.

Physically, butternut squash has bell-shaped with yellow skin and an orange pulp with seeds.  Further, it weighs as heavy as 3 pounds, and its size ranges from 8 to 12 inches in length, and 3 to 5 inches wide.  Apart from that, it is also a good source of vitamin A, vitamin C, manganese, magnesium, fiber and potassium.

What is more, you can prepare or cook this vegetable in plentiful ways, such as toast, fried, and roasted.  In addition, it can be mashed or pureed to be used in other dishes like soups, casseroles, among others.  You can even use your microwave to cook your winter squash.

Any person with no culinary skills will have no problems on learning how to cook butternut squash in microwave.  Using the microwave for winter squash is nothing new.  Additionally, you have the option to cook the squash in halves or whole, even in chunks or pieces.

The instructions are quite simple, here goes:

1.    For whole squash, wash and pat dry, before you place the squash in the microwave.
2.    Pierce the vegetable all over to allow the steam to escape, since the steam build up can cause the squash to explode inside the microwave.


3.    Place the squash on a shallow microwavable dish, then, set on high.  Mostly, it takes about 10 minutes to cook medium sized squash, but for bigger ones, more time is required.


4.    In case you will cook the squash in half, place the halves on a shallow dish with their cut side facing downwards.
5.    Set the microwave temperature on high for about 8 to 10 minutes.  Afterward, remove it, and then cover the open parts with waxed paper.  Place it again on the oven to be cook for another 8 minutes, but with the cut sides facing upwards.
6.    For cooking squash cubes in the microwave, simply, peel and slice the butternut squash into cubes.  Next, place them on a baking dish.  Set the microwave on high, cook for 10 to 12 minutes.  You may also choose any shapes and sizes that would suit to your liking.
