How to Cook Brown Rice on the Stovetop?

If ever you find yourself facing the dilemma of deciding whether to go for white or brown rice, well, that’s tough.  However, between the two, better go for brown rice. This type of rice is full packed with vitamins, high in fiber, and contains bran.  As such, brown rice is healthier compared to white rice.  In addition, it is tastier too; in fact, it is nuttier in flavor than white rice.

To begin with, brown rice is almost the same as white rice but obviously differs in color.  The color brown comes from the high fiber bran that covers it.  The bran is actually one of the reasons why people opt for brown over white rice.  Furthermore, you can easily cook this rice using a rice cooker, as well as on a  stove top.

Well, we are all familiar with cooking rice in rice cooker, right?  But, only a few knows how to cook brown rice on a stovetop.

Just like all grains, brown rice also swells as it cooks.  The amount of water added is very important.  So, for each cup of brown rice that is cooked, it will result to 2 cups of cooked rice.  Also, since it is coated with bran, more water is needed, and takes longer time to cook.

Nevertheless, let us start our cooking brown rice on stovetop lessons.

As with any cooking, gathering the essential items first is a must.
-    a cup of brown rice
-    water
-    pot with lid
-    fork and spoon

Directions:

1.    Prepare the pot with lid, add the rice and water.  The ratio is 1 cup of rice to 1.5 cups of water.
2.    Use maximum heat.  Bring both rice and water to a boil, but uncovered.  Once boiling, cover it with the lid.
3.     Lower the heat, and let it simmer for about 20 minutes.  Keep the steam valve of the lid closed, if any.
4.    When the time is up, turn the heat off.
5.    Allow the rice to sit between 10 minutes to 30 minutes.


6.    Gently remove the lid.  Test if the rice is well cooked by fluffing it with fork.  The grains should separate when fluff.
7.    Serve together with your favorite dish.
