On top of that, broccoli can be bought in almost every grocery store or market and it is a good veggie to complement other dishes on the table. Even though cooking broccoli is easy, the trick here is to cook it the right way, so that its nutritional value is not loss in the preparation process.
One of the ways to prepare this veggie is through steaming. With this method, you are rest assured that broccoli’s nutritive contents are intact. Moreover, it also preserves the taste, texture and green color of the vegetable.
Since you are going to steam this veggie, you will need a steamer for that. However, if you don’t have one, you can cook it on the stove
top.
In case, you haven’t tried steaming broccoli on a stove yet, don’t fret. I’ll teach you how to cook broccoli on the stove.
As with any other vegetables, it is essential that you picked out the freshest one from the pack. Fresh broccoli appears dark green in color; the tops will be tight and close too. Any yellow part on the vegetable is not fresh.
Begin by cleaning the broccoli under running water. Alternatively, you can fill a pot with water, then, dip the vegetable several times. Don’t forget to clean the stem too. Next, slice the broccoli into pieces or florets using sharp knife. To do that, hold the stem then cut the head off.
Afterward, put the florets on a metal colander that you can used to suspend the rims into the pan. It is done so that there is enough space about 4 inches between the bottom of the colander and the pan.
Shortly, pour sufficient water in the pan. Put the colander over the pan; cover it with tight fitting lid. Then, allow the water to boil. After that, let it simmer for approximately 6 minutes or until the broccoli is tender. Lastly, remove the lid cover gently. It is best consumed when still hot.
One more thing, for some twist of flavor, you can add cheese sauce, ranch dressing, and white sauce, just to name a few, on top of your steam broccoli.
